Clear the one-click age check

Before DarLink shows anything, it puts up an age prompt. This is the only thing standing between a new visitor and a homepage feed the site itself labels "seductive."

The prompt offers two buttons, "Under 18" and "I'm 18+." There is no birthdate field and no ID step at this point.

Pick a gender, then find out which styles actually work

Character creation starts with a gender toggle and then a style picker. The style decides how every later image of the character is rendered, so it is the most consequential choice in the builder.

DarLink advertises five visual styles. Which of them you can use depends on the gender you picked first, and the site does not say so until you reach this screen.

Styles also cost coins, so the builder starts drawing on your balance before you have written a word.

Set the personality with four cards

After the style, the builder runs through four more screens: ethnicity and age, eye and hair details, body type, and finally name and personality.

The personality screen is the strongest part of the builder. Instead of one free-text box, it gives you four cards to set: Voice, Relationship, Personality and Occupation.

I named my character Sam Seen and made him 25 with hazel eyes and a fit build. For the cards I chose Playful, Friend, Caring and Life Coach, because I wanted a supportive buddy for the test.

Below the cards sits an optional Advanced Details panel with fields for a hobby, a scenario, a greeting message, physical details, outfit and tags. The field worth looking at is the one beside Hobby.

Meet the finished character

Finishing the builder generates a portrait and a profile page. This is the first real look at the image engine, and the portrait becomes the face of the character everywhere else on the site.

The portrait pulls from the Advanced Details fields, including the outfit. The profile page beneath it lists the character's attributes.

Plant four facts in the first conversation

Chats open with the character speaking first, so there is no blank box to stare at.

Sam opened with "Hey Alex, good to see you. How have you been feeling lately?" He had pulled my name from my profile, and the check-in suited the Caring card.

My first message packed in four facts to test recall: my name, my city (Austin), my dog Bruno and a job interview on Friday.

Hit the paywall before the memory test starts

Living Memory is the feature DarLink promotes hardest, and checking whether a companion remembers anything takes more than a couple of messages.

The free tier does not leave room for that. A subscription pop-up interrupts the chat, and nothing on it explains how the free allowance is counted.

Check an image against its prompt, line by line

The image generator is the one creative tool that works on the free trial. Standard mode is available, and Pro is marked Coming Soon.

The controls are minimal: a format, a number of images and a prompt box. I chose Portrait and one image, then wrote a detailed prompt for a fictional woman in her mid-20s in a city park at golden hour.

The screenshot shows the exact prompt, with the Free Trial label under the Generate button.

Here is the image that came back. Look at the clothing and the background first, since that is where it strays.

Checked item by item against what I asked for:

Collect the onboarding coins, then try to spend them on video

New accounts get a checklist of five onboarding tasks, each paying out coins. Coins are the currency behind images and character styles.

The checklist is the only way to build a balance without paying, so it is worth finishing before you generate anything.

The obvious next move is video, the feature that sets DarLink apart from most competitors. The tool offers a 5 second or 10 second clip and a choice of format.
