A capable agentic video tool that has been acquired and is sunsetting, yet still sells subscriptions while its own project export is broken. Do not pay for this.

30-Second Verdict

Should you use Focal?

Best for

Almost nobody right now. The engine is genuinely capable, but the company has been acquired and is shutting the product down.

Skip if

You want a tool you can rely on next month. New creation stops when a plan expires, and the site was slated to go offline already.

Real cost

Paid plans still run from $10 to $100 a month, buying access to a product with a published end date that has already passed.

Watch out

The export flow is broken. The one action Focal tells every user to complete would not run in testing, so your work can be trapped.

Capabilities

Key features & how they perform

Each feature rated on what the engine does, set against the reality that the product is being retired.

🎬
★★★★☆ 3.8

Model lineup

Routes across Veo, Seedance, Kling and Hailuo for video, plus Nano Banana, Flux Klein and Seedream for images. A strong roster on paper.

📝
★★★★☆ 3.6

Script to video

Turns an idea into a script, then into scenes. You can bring your own screenplay and let the agent adapt it into shots.

👥
★★★★☆ 3.5

Consistent characters

Characters and locations are generated once and reused across scenes and projects, aimed at keeping faces stable between shots.

💬
★★★☆☆ 3.4

Edit with chat

Revise a script or a scene in plain language, like shortening a conversation or swapping a shot setup, alongside a timeline editor.

★☆☆☆☆ 1.0

Project export

The exit the shutdown depends on. It demands a Chromium browser, then leaves the start button frozen, so exporting failed outright in testing.

⚠️
★☆☆☆☆ 1.0

Business continuity

Acquired and sunsetting. A sister address is already dark, the published shutdown date has passed, and new creation ends when a plan lapses.

Feature ratings reflect hands-on testing of a live-but-winding-down product. No usable third-party review base exists for Focal.

Hands-On Walkthrough

What I found when I signed into a product that is shutting down

I tested Focal from a US visitor's point of view, starting logged out and following the shutdown through its own broken export flow.

The public homepage showed no sign of trouble

I started where any new visitor from the US would start, at focalml.com without logging in. The page pitched an agentic video creation platform and invited me to turn a one-line idea into a finished video.

Nothing on this screen hinted that the product was closing. No banner, no notice of any kind. A first-time visitor would read this and assume Focal was open for business and safe to pay for.

What I noticed The logged-out homepage says nothing about a shutdown. That picture changes the instant you sign in.

Signing in exposed the shutdown

The moment my account loaded, a gold banner ran across the top announcing that Focal is sunsetting and pushing me to export all my projects. A popup sat on top of it with two links, Learn more and Export your projects.

Behind the popup I could still see the live tool, the Flux Klein 9B image model and the LTX2 video model, with speed tiers from Fast at about 18 credits a minute up to Max at roughly 600. My balance read 40 credits.

My take So the engine still runs. Focal has simply decided to stop treating it as a product you can rely on, and only a logged-in user ever learns that.

Exporting my work was the real test, and it resisted

Focal's own notice tells you to export everything before the lights go out, so I tried to do precisely that. Clicking Export your projects stopped me at once with a yellow warning: exporting only works in Chromium browsers like Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge.

I switched to a supported browser and reached the next screen, a panel asking what I wanted to download, from a full copy of everything down to source assets on their own. I picked Everything and went looking for the start button.

The result Choose folder and start export sat greyed out and dead to every click. The exit the entire shutdown depends on would not open for me, even in Chrome.

Even the announcement is half-broken

I wanted the full timeline, so I opened the Focal is sunsetting letter in full. A popup dropped over the text and would not close, and the page refused to scroll underneath it. I could read the opening lines about the acquisition and the million-plus users, while the actual dates stayed buried below.

I confirmed the specifics separately. Subscriptions cancel at the end of the current billing period, and new creation is disabled once a plan expires. The site was set to go offline on September 1, 2026, after which account data would no longer be reachable.

Worth knowing I ran this test on October 22, nearly two months past the stated shutdown date, and the site was still online and still asking me to export, its pricing page running as if nothing had changed. Focal had blown through its own published deadline while the product kept stumbling forward.

A sister site had already gone dark

One last check settled how far along this really is. I opened askfocal.com, a related Focal address, and met a black screen carrying a single line: Focal has been sunset, under an Unavailable status light.

Observation One door is already bolted shut while the other sits propped open with its payment page still running.

The pricing page was still taking money

This is where the test shifted from disappointing to concerning. The pricing page was still live and still presenting four tiers as though business were normal.

Every paid plan still promised premium models and monthly video limits. A reader landing here has no way of knowing that a subscription pays for a product already scheduled to vanish. The tiers themselves, and the gap they leave out, get their own section below with the screenshot.

How it went On the product side, the takeaway is simple: the checkout works even though the thing you are buying is being switched off.
Plans & Cost

Focal pricing

Figures taken from the official Focal pricing page, which was still live and billing during the wind-down.

Plan Price What's included
Free $0 30 starting credits · 10 daily credits when the initial pool runs out · basic image and video models only · slower generations · personal use
Starter $10 /mo 1,000 monthly credits · 50 daily credits · best models including Veo and Seedance · up to 1,000 seconds of video per month · commercial use
Standard Most Popular $30 /mo 3,900 monthly credits · 50 daily credits · best models including Veo and Seedance · more monthly video · commercial use
Pro $100 /mo 15,000 monthly credits · 50 daily credits · best models including Veo and Seedance · up to 15,000 seconds of video per month · commercial use

Pricing is accurate as of 22 October 2026 and was captured from the official Focal website. Plans, prices and credit limits change often, so check the official Focal pricing page for the current figures before you subscribe.

⚠ The part they bury The pricing page says nothing about the shutdown. Every paid tier is sold as a live monthly subscription, yet the product is acquired and sunsetting, with new creation disabled once a plan expires. The company's own notice says the site was due offline on September 1, 2026, a date already passed at the time of testing, after which account data would be unreachable. Paying any of these prices buys access to a product being switched off, and the export meant to protect your work was broken in testing.
The Balance

Pros & cons

Focal has no usable review base on the public sites, so this weighs its documented capabilities against its documented wind-down.

✅ Pros

  • Routes across Veo, Seedance, Kling and Hailuo for video generation
  • Adapts a book or screenplay into shots rather than single clips
  • Reuses one character and location set across scenes and projects
  • Natural-language chat edits a script or swaps a shot setup
  • Timeline editing and frame interpolation for final polish

⛔ Cons

  • Acquired and sunsetting, so the whole product is being retired
  • Project export failed outright, leaving work with no reliable way out
  • Pricing page keeps selling subscriptions during the wind-down
  • Logged-out homepage hides the shutdown from new visitors entirely
  • Sister address askfocal.com is already fully offline
  • New creation stops the moment a paid plan expires
  • Published offline date passed while the broken site kept running

Focal has no ratings on G2, Trustpilot, Product Hunt or the mobile app stores, so these points come from hands-on testing and the company's own shutdown notice, not user reviews.

Who Should Use Focal AI, and Who Should Avoid It?

Because Focal is acquired and sunsetting, this is less about workflows and more about who, if anyone, has a reason to open it at all.

Who Might Still Open Focal AI?

The only narrow reasons left

Existing Users Rescuing Their Work

If you built projects here before the wind-down, the one task left is to try the export while the site is still up, bugs and all.

The Curious, Spending Nothing

The free tier still grants a few credits, so you can see the agentic workflow and model routing without paying for a dying product.

Researchers Studying Shutdowns

As a live example of how an acqui-hired consumer AI tool handles its own closure, it is instructive, though that is cold comfort to a paying user.

Who Should Avoid Focal AI?

Which is almost everyone

Anyone About to Subscribe

Paying any tier buys access to a product with a published end date that has already passed. Put the money toward a tool that will still exist.

Creators With Deadlines

New creation ends when a plan lapses, and the site itself is overdue to go offline, so nothing here is safe to build a project around.

Anyone Who Needs Their Files Back

The export flow failed in testing even on a supported browser, so there is no guarantee you can retrieve what you make.

New Users Who Found It Via Search

The logged-out homepage and pricing page hide the shutdown, so the product can look open for business when it is not.

Our Recommendation

Do not subscribe to Focal. The underlying tool is capable, but the company has been acquired and is retiring the product while its checkout keeps running and its export is broken. If you already have work inside Focal, attempt the export now, in Chrome or Edge, and keep local copies of anything that comes out. Everyone else should pick an active alternative and treat this review as a warning, not a buying guide.

Focal scorecard

Rated against what an AI video creation platform must do, with business continuity weighted as its own dimension.

How we score Each dimension is rated 0 to 10 from hands-on testing. No usable third-party review base exists for Focal, so review sentiment does not feed these scores. Continuity, export and billing trust are scored as first-class dimensions because a video tool that is shutting down fails its users regardless of output quality. Final Verdict

A good tool you should not pay for, because it is being switched off

In a normal year, Focal would score well. The model routing across Veo, Seedance, Kling and Hailuo is strong, the agentic jump from idea to script to scenes is the kind of workflow the category keeps promising, and reusable characters tackle the consistency problem head on. None of that is the story. Focal has been acquired and is sunsetting, and it is handling that closure badly. The logged-out homepage and the pricing page still sell four subscription tiers with no hint of a shutdown, so a new visitor can pay for a product that is being retired. The export flow, the one action Focal urges every user to complete, demanded a specific browser and then left its start button frozen, so work can be trapped with no way out. A sister address is already dark, and the company's own offline date had passed while the broken site kept running. The score reflects that split: a capable engine, dragged down by a wind-down that puts anyone who pays at real risk. Existing users should try to export now and keep local copies. Everyone else should choose an active alternative and leave this one alone.
